Reading Note Chapter 1-2
1) identifying characters, 2) summarizing the plot, and 3) offering some personal response/ideas about the story
1) Characters:
- Agwe: God of the Sea
- Asaka: Goddess of the Earth
- Monsieur Bienconnu: The person who knows the most in the village
- Mama Euralie: Mother of Ti Moune
- Tonton Julian: Father of Ti Moune
- Ti Moune: The girl that was left behind by her own mother and then adapted by Mama Euralie and Tonton Julian.
- Peasants: Poor people who live in the village of Jewel of the Antilles.
- Grand Hommes: Rich people who live on the other side of Jewel of the Antilles.
2) Summarizing the plot:
The first and the second chapter explained the background information of the story. On an island called Jewel of the Antilles, live the peasants and the grand hommes. They live on different sides of the island. The peasants on the island believe the gods are the ones that determine their destinies. They rule the rain, the land and everything else. Because of people's greed, all the fruit on the land were picked and only dry lands are left in the island. People wishes for rain to help them grow food and fill their stomaches. However, they are afraid of heavy rain flood their homes as well. Ti Moune, one of the main characters in the story were the only surviver of a terrible flood. She and the people in the village all believed that she survived because Agwe wanted her to live. Therefore, this little girl always thinks herself being different from all the others in the village. She's never satisfied with where she is either. Every time she hears the cars driving through, she just want to get on it and to race away. She believes there must be so much more with her life.
3)
Honestly, I don't like the setting of Ti Moune. The way that she thinks herself being different from others makes me uncomfortable. At the same time, I do understand where all her characters come from. She was surrounded by the love of Mama Euralie and Tonton Julian. This love spoiled her. In her mind, not only her parents, even the Gods loves her more than others as well. Since she was the only surviver of the horrible flood, she thinks Agwe wanted her to live because she was special. All of those reasonings don't really make any sense in my mind because she didn't earn any of those specialities on her own, how can she think herself being different?
