Questions to the author

1. Do you think most people read poems because they want to experience something that they had never felt before, or are they seeking for resonance? 2. Do you enjoy the process of the "hurt business"?  I mean, you end up bring out the facts and share them with the readers/audience. However, you get to meet people who have gone through those things in person and listen to their stories. How does that make you feel?

Reading note "Seeing Things Simply"

1) There are three main characters in this story, Princesse, the old man and Catherine. Princesse is an ordinary girl in her village. She goes to school like other girls do. However, she has a secret duty--she is the model for Catherine. Catherine often ask Princesse to take off all her clothes, including the under wares while she paints Princesse's body. No one but them know the relationship between them. Catherine promised to let no one in the village to look at the paintings of Princesse's naked body. The old man is married. He drinks beside the rooster battle field everyday. His wife always comes and try to take him home. It look like she has never succeeded yet. 2) Everyday when Princesse goes by the rooster battle field, she always hears people's yelling and the roosters' roars. This is one of the places she has to pass to go to Catherine's house. This day, after Princesse arrived, Catherine asked her to take off all her clothes and sit on the veranda. Princ...

Reflection on in-class performance

Helen&Grace: In this group performance, Grace played as Lili and Helen played as the female narrator in Children of The Sea. They performed a scene of the female narrator tries to run on the boat but she bumped into Lili and missed the boat. This performance especially showed the female narrator's desperation to freedom and to her true love. At the same time, the way that Grace(Lili) comforted her showed her loving and caring character. Their performance also made it clear that Lili was much more mature than the female narrator. David&Yun David played as Guy and Yun played the Night Woman in this story. For the book has not revealed the relationship between them yet, they assumed that the Night Woman is Lili and made a scene which Guy actually came back to her and her son. And he left not because he's dead, but because he had abandoned her and her son. When Night Women's son(played by Josh) comes out, the way that Guy talked suddenly changed. He told his son t...

In-class reflection analyze

The theme that I want to analyze is VIOLENT. Even before reading the book, while I was researching for Haitian history, I knew violence had always been part of Haitians' lives. However, as I read more and more about the book, I get to know more and more about how it was actually done. In the first story of the book, Children of The Sea, two characters had been violently treated, Madam Roger and Celiane. Madam Roger's son was killed. And the soldiers only gave Madam Roger back her son's head. I can't even imagine how sad and hopeless would she, or any mom be when she sees her son dead. She can't even hug him anymore because all that's left is his head. The soldiers come to her and ask her if her son was part of the youth federation. She tried to hold herself back but it was just too hard. True. No one can stay calm when people who possibly killed your loved ones show up at your house and start to insult the dead. She rages and they beat her down.  "They st...

Analysing Character (Célianne)

1.  WHO AM I?   My name is Célianne. People always think I'm about nineteen to twenty years old. However, I'm fifteen. I lived in Fort-au-Prince with my mother and my brother. Both of them are probably died by now. Maybe it's easier that way. We don't have to see each other and remind each other of that terrible past anymore. The scars on my face might be horrible. But no one knows it hurts even more on the inside. It tortures me every time I inhale, reminding me I'm still alive, still not free. I'm so hangry. I don't have any food with me. But I have to be strong. My baby needs me. Her face is so small and soft. Maybe she's so hangry too. She refuse to talk to me because I didn't give her enough food. Oh my poor little girl. Please forgive mommy. Once we get on land, I will find you everything you need. I will take the rest of my life to give you all the love I have. When you ask me, I will tell you that your father is the kindest man I have ever ...
What's night woman's attitude towards her "gone away lover". Use specific quotes to explain the answer.

Reading Notes 4

1) identifying characters, 2) summarizing the plot, and 3) offering some personal response/ideas about the story Nineteen Seventy Four 1) There are three main characters in this story,  Josephine, Stephine, and Stephine's mother. Stephine's grandmother was killed during the Massacre. Stephine's mother gave birth to her on the same day as the Massacre after successfully escaped to the other side of the river. Stephine's mother and Josephine are both parts of a secret religious group.  2) This story is told from the perspective of Stephine. She described the times that she visited her mother and how her mother was tortured both physically and mentally. The only connection between her mother and she was her mother's Madonna. Stephine also said in the story the reason why her mother was arrested: they were new to the city and they lived in her mother's friend's house. Her mother helped taking care of that friend's ill son. One day morning, the chi...

Theme+Quote Analys

The theme that the first three stories all share is freedom. In the first story, the boy got on the boat to escape from Haiti. He wanted so much more than being trapped around all the cruel soldiers. Even it meant to be separated from his dearest lover, he didn't regret his decision at all. He wants freedom. He wants to go to America so that he doesn't need to worry about his life every day. He can say what he wants to and do what he wants to. The girl in the first story also wanted freedom. She wrote down these sentences in her writing: "I will never go outside again. Not even in the yard to breathe the air. They are always watchings you, like cultures. at night i can't sleep. I count the bullets in the dark. I keep wondering if it is true. " She didn't want to stay at home all day. She didn't want to be worried about her life all day and couldn't sleep. She didn't want to see the soldiers walking around the street, killing people for no reason. ...
