First Draft of the Written Coursework

My group performed the last scene of The Glass Menageries. In order to provide the audience with enough background information about the situation, we decided to start from Jim’s explanation to Laura from page 64 of the book. I played the role of Jim in this scene. In many ways, it was a challenging role to play. Firstly, it is not easy to play a character in the opposite gender than me. The fact that there is no strong emotion involved on his part made it even harder. However, I still chose to play this role because I want to find out more about him and his feeling towards the Wingfields. Does he feel sympathy for them or is he just trying to leave a good impression on them? In the book, Jim was really popular when he was in high school.(QUOTE) However, the spotlight on him had somehow faded. When he met Laura, who remembered all the shinning moment of his, it seemed that the spotlight had come back to him. (QUOTE) Being admired by someone is always a joyful thing. Therefore, when Ji...

Evaluation of the Final Draft

After submitting the Final Draft of the video, I felt released. My teammates and I were so nervous on the stage and we made some mistakes that we have never made during our practices. Even so, I’ve seen us improved a lot compare to the first draft of the performance.     For me, the reviews that I received after the first draft were mostly about my voice being not loud enough and my lines being lack of dynamic, or in other words, emotionless. In the final draft, I raised my voice up generally and put in some changes of volume and speed. For example, in my monologue, I raised my voice when I was saying “Oh boy, being in love has made a new man of me! The power of love is pretty tremendous! Love is something that, changes the whole world!” These lines shows how excited Jim was when he talks about his love and his feelings. They also expressed Jim’s love to his partner. Then, I lowered my voice when saying the following lines “It happened that Betty’s a...

Respond to the first draft

After checking the feedbacks about the first draft performance from my classmates, I noticed several things that I need to work on. Firstly, some people mentioned that my voice was too quiet for the most parts. That made my character very flat and emotionless. I should have more rise and falls with my voice so that people can feel the emotional change of the character when he says his lines. Secondly, I swang a lot when I was doing my monologue, as always. I tried to think of the reason why I always do that. And I figured it might be because I concentrated too much on the words and forget to pay attention to the actual meanings of the words. I swing my body when I’m nervous. I want to add some body movements to my acting but forget to move my feet around. It might get better after I have memorized all my lines. Moreover, I should think more about what I should do to make the performance more natural and realistic. It also might be that because we put too much attention on the words an...
