Krik? Krak!- Children of the Sea Reading Notes

a) There are two narrators in the story of " Children of the Seat". The light colored part is written from the perspective of a boy. He is a member of the "radio six", a youth federation group that Haiti government sees as its enemy. He studied at a university. Now, he is on a boat with 31 other Haitians. They are sailing away from Haiti. It seems like the destination is Miami. The other part is printed in a darker ink. This part is written from the perspective of the lover of that boy. She studied at the university too. However, she had to quit school because "all the schools were shouted down after the army took over". She lives in fort-au-prince with her mother and her father. The girl and the boy promised to keep writing about what happened to them while they are apart. That's why they started their journal. b) From the boy's perspective: He got on the boat, fining out there are 31 others with him. Most of the people on board are much older ...

Edwidge Danticat Reaserch

Edwidge Danticat grew up in Heidi. Her parents moved to United States when she was very young. Her father left when she was two years old. After two years, her mom left too.  She came to United States to study when she was 12. She didn't fit in to the environment really well. Her works are greatly influence by her childhood experiences.  She writes about three main themes: mother daughter relationship, national identity and diasporic politics. Other than the three themes mentioned, Danticat also writes about justice and violence. She take her identity of woman very seriously as well.  Her works are in different forms. She's not only involved in novel writing, but also filmmaking, short stories and children's literature.  Lots of Danticat's works concludes the legends and other myth that she had heard since she was a child.

Reflection on the Mini Performances

1. Aaron/Grace/Yun This mini performance is adapted from the scene of crown heights event. Aaron played as a volunteer who tries to stop people from fighting and biting each other, saying “the police won’t harm you”. However, he was captured by a police. The police kicked and punched him on the floor even after Aaron’s character explained what he was trying to do. Then, Yun came as another police, asking the other police to let go of the young man. This scene showed the conflict and discrimination within American society. It emphasized the violence caused by the discrimination as well. Under such an atmosphere, people don't trust each other. They fight, they rage, they do all they can to express their anger and only support what they think is right.  2. Helen/David. W/Joey This mini performance represents the theme of race. Helen's character represented a Jewish man saying"Jewish people don't drive on the street; Jewish people don't drive to a child..." ...

Verbatim Theater reflection

Reflect on your experience last week exploring Verbatim Theater. Why do you think people do it? What does it accomplish? What was your experience like (and your group's experience)? Was the process difficult? And if so, how so? Were any aspects easier than others? Did you enjoy it? Why or why not? What did you learn? I think people do Verbatim Theater because they want to show lots people’s point of views during one production. It might be hard for ordinary people to gather and talk to people on stage about themselves, especially when it’s related to something that might harmed them or their love ones before. Therefore, companies interview those people and record the interview. After that, they put it on stage, showing the audience almost exactly how the interviewees behaved during the interview. A video tape might be more realistic to the audience, but for most of people, a video of people talking is boring. That’s also the reason why while Verbatim Theaters try to make the prod...

First Blog of The Senior Year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is theater, in your opinion? What makes it good to participate in, to perform, or to watch? Why do people do theater or watch it or like it? Why do YOU? What aspects of theater are most important for performers to learn and think about? In your experience, what is easy and fun about theater and what is challenging? In my opinion, theater works like a magic box. It puts words into lines, into lyrics, into reality. Being a part of a theater production is such a great thing because you get to decide how you want to present your character. Making people think of you whenever they think of the character. Isn't it exciting? It is also very exciting to meet the audience as a theater production too. You are walking into a different world once you've walked into a theater. You get to know different characters and their stories. If you have read about the story before, it's also exciting to meet the character that had been living in your mind in person. Are you just the way y...
