Personal Reflection to the Final Draft
Strength:
The fact that our performance includes not only acting but also singing can make us stand out from other performances. It not only shows our ability to combine different types of performing skills but also our skill of developing something complicated and interesting based on the text. Meanwhile, the balance of acting and singing in our performance is really important too. It shows that we are making this performance a musical not because of the lack of our acting skills, but rather, challenging ourselves and take advantage of our talents in a reasonable way.
Weakness:
Our biggest strength is also our biggest weakness. It takes a lot more time to prepare a musical. We have to compose our lyrics and accompaniment from zero. It is a process that takes lots of thinking and editing. Also, in order to make the whole performance smooth, we have to have light music playing when we are talking as well. Otherwise, the singing parts will seem very awkward.
For me, I have to be more aware of my body movements as I say/sing my lines. When I was viewing my group's final performance for this semester, I noticed the repeating pattern of my body movements that made me seem less "alive". That doesn't help the audience understand the emotions that I want to convey which is not a good thing because the whole performance is about showing the emotions of different characters.
The choice of directing a musical did require my group working more than we originally needed to do. However, we both think it is worth it and we will strive to make the best out of it.
