Compare and Contrast NYDW and NW
Both the story of New York Day Woman and Night Woman described how mother sacrifices for their children. In the Night woman, the mother took the job of being a prostitute in order to make money to support her son after her husband had left them. The New York day woman has the job of being the “Nani” of the child of another woman. Both the Day Woman and the Night Woman hid their job from there children. However, they might do it for different reasons. For Night Woman, she doesn’t want her son to know about his job because she is ashamed of her job. Being a prostitute is not a job that would bring you. Shame comes along with every penny that she makes. For New York Day Woman, the way that she treats her only daughter is described in the play as careless and even somehow rude. However, being a Nani means she has to treat that little child nicely. And she did so indeed. She bought that little boy a can of soda. This is very different from how she would treat her daughter. Based on those facts, it is reasonable to infer that the Day Woman hid her job from her daughter so that her status in her daughter’s mind remains strict and harsh. It is also possible that she feels sorry for not treating her daughter nicely, but she is too ashamed to say it to her daughter. She can only show the loving side of her to another child.
These two stories showed the living condition for Haitian Woman in Haiti and the Haitian Woman in New York. The Haitian Woman in New York had more freedom than Haitian Woman in Haiti. She doesn’t need to sell her body to others in order to earn money to support her family. The stories also showed the different possibilities of the children of those women. In Haiti, it is too hard for a woman to raise a child all by herself. The job she takes is not steady nor safe. What if she can’t support her child until he grows up? Will that child has a bright future? No one will know. On the other side, the daughter of the New York Day Woman already has a job in Manhattan. Her life is mostly secured. In other words, the New York Woman had l the choice of not having a job at all. She was not forced to take such a job.
