Reflection of the improve
I’m very glad that I chose Spring improve as my activity. This is a totally new experience for me and a lot of the members in our cast. When we first started to rehearse, I didn’t feel like rehearsing at all. The rehearsals seemed like games and I was just having fun during those games. However, as we get closer and closer to the day of the actual show, I noticed something has changed. I thought we just need to work hard to show the creativity of ourselves as individuals. But what’s really important is the interactions among us, the cast members. It’s not only about showing people who great I am, standing out from the rest of the group. It’s about how we work with each other to create interesting scene together. We have to give trust to each other and provide information that our teammates can catch and build on to it. Another thing that’s really important is to always say “Yes” to whatever your peer says. In improve, lots things don’t go as the way it usually is in our lives. And when this happens, it usually means that the person is trying to build a scene that will eventually turn out to something else. Therefore, trying to figure out where the story is going and follow the logic of our peers is very important. That’s why Sam always uses “I don’t know where that is going” as a reason to stop the scene which makes perfect sense to me. It happens...a lot, when there are people that just want to experience their overly creative ideas and that’s just not how improves should be. Rather than knowing more about how to react quickly to scene, I learned more about how to work within a group after doing the improve. It’s more about respecting, accepting and considering each other.
