Proposal

The scenes that I want to do is the first scene in the play where the servants of the Capulet and Montague families fought on the street. I want this adaption to be comic. The scene will be set in the gym. The people in the Capulet family and the Montague family will be changed to volleyball team and basketball team. There will also be a coach to represent the role of the Prince. I only want two random characters from each family and one coach to be in the scene. These characters will be relevant in the scene because I want to show how big the conflict between the Capulet family (volleyball team) and the Montagues family (basketball team) is. The conflict is not only between the leaders of the two families; it’s between the two group, among all the members from each side. The member from each side will be wearing the outfits that they usually wear to practice. One of the members from the Capulet side will be holding a volleyball and one of the members form the Montague family will be holding a basketball. The lights in the gym will be good for the scene since I want the audience to notice that the situation in the scene is just a normal part of the daily life of those members. There will be mostly people talking. Therefore, the music in the scene won’t be too loud.
In the scene, the characters will be arguing because the volleyball team wants to insult the basketball team and make them feel bad. The basketball team will not just take it so that they started to argue back to the volleyball team. They will be using lots comic languages in the scene. There will be jokes in this scene. I want to think of a line that can replace the line “No, sir, I do not bite my thumb at you, sir, but I bite my thumb, sir.” to show that the Montagues (volleyball players) was trying to anger the Capulets (basketball players). In the end, the coach will come out last to resolve the issue and stop the conflict. He speaks seriously to the members of two teams and tells them that there will be a punishment to all of them if a similar situation ever takes place again in the gym.

I think this is a good scene for us to do because firstly, it is close so that people can go and practice for it easily. Secondly, the customs and the crops are easy to get and people can see that this is a modernized version from of the play from these things. Lastly, I think this is a really important scene to highlight and to let the audience know that the conflict between two families is pretty tense and that caused the most trouble between the relationship between Romeo and Juliet.
