Scene 1:

Romeo felt good after meeting with Juliet and was wishing to hear some good news from Verona. However, Balthasar came and told him about Juliet’s death. Romeo was so sad about her death and decided to go and kill himself by Juliet’s side. Therefore, he commanded Balthasar to go and hire him a horse to use. Then, Romeo went to Apothecary to but the poison from him. The apothecary refused to sell him the poison at first because he was afraid that he will be punished by law. However, Romeo offered a good price and convienced the apothecary to break the law. After successfully buying the poison, Romeo was more sure of his plan and decided he must use the poison.

Important Qoutes:

  • Balthasar: Then she is well and nothing can be ill. Her body sleeps in Capel’s mounument, and her immortal part with anfels lives. I saw her laid low in her kindred’s vault, and presently took post to tell it you.
  • Romeo: No matter, get thee gone, and hire those horses; I will be with thee straight.
  • Romeo: Well, Juliet, I will lie with thee tonight.
  • Romeo: Come, cordial and not poison, go with me to Juliet’s grave, for there must I use thee.

Scene 2:

Friar John comes to Friar Lawrence to tell him about the letter that Friar Lawrence had asked him to deliver to Romeo. However, he was unable to deliver the letter. Friar was very worried about Juliet because she will wake up in the tomb in three hours and Romeo don’t know anything about their plan. It won’t work if Romeo can’t pick up Juliet and leave with her. Friar Lawrence asked Friar John to hire him an iron crow and plan to write again to Mantua and go straight to the tomb.

Important Quotes:

  • Friar John: Going to find a barefoot brother out, one of our order, to associate me, here in this city visiting the side, and finding him, the searchers of the town, suspecting that we both were in a house where the infectious pestilence did reign, seal’d up the doors and would not let us forth, so that my speed to Mantua there was stay’d.
  • Friar Lawrence: Now must I to the monument alone, within this three hours will fair Juliet wake. She will beshrew me much that Romeo hath had no notice of these accidents.

These two senses explained the biggest misunderstanding of the play. Romeo didn’t know anything about the plan between Friar Lawrence and Juliet and decided to commit a suicide. The actions that there two lovers took were almost the same--killing themselves in order to be with each other. That makes the audience sad by seeing how deep, and yet immature their love is. The people who don't really know about the plan somehow caused the tragedy. It is somehow their fault but somehow not related to them at all. That’s what makes this play so controversial and led people to think of it from many different views.
