Scene 3:
Romeo hides in the church and Frair wants to comfort him. Romeo asks about Prince’s decision and got informed-he’s banished from Verona. Romeo thinks this banishment is the other way of saying death because he thinks the places without Juliet are all counted as hell. He wouldn’t listen no matter what Friar says. The nurse comes in and asks to see Romeo. Romeo got sadder and wanted to kill himself. At that time, Friar stopped Romeo. Friar had lost his patience and said to Romeo he’s womanish. The only way to be together with Juliet is to live and to wait for the chance to get the Prince’s forgiveness and therefore get back to Verona. Romeo is comforted and agreed to go to Juliet.
Important Quotes:
- Romeo: Ha, banishment? Be merciful, say “death”; for exile hath more terror in his look, much more than death. Do not say “banishment”!
- Frair: Art thou a man? Thy form cries out thou art; thy tears are womanish, thy wild acts fenot the unreasonable fury of a beast.
Scene 4:
Capulet decided to marry Juliet to Paris on Thursday which is three days later. He commands Lady Capulet to tell the news to her daughter and prepare her for the marriage.
Important Quotes:
- Capulet: A’ Thursday let it be-a’ Thursday, tell her, she shall be married to this noble earl.
- Capulet: Go you to Juliet ere you go to bed, prepare her, wife, against this wedding-day.
Scene 5:
Romeo had met Juliet and stayed with her almost until the morning. Juliet wanted him to stay and Romeo agreed, starting to talk about death and he just wants to be with Juliet. Juliet knew how serious the situation is and told Romeo to leave. They kissed and Romeo left, promising to send greetings to her whenever he can. Lady Capulet comes in and saw Juliet crying. She thought Juliet is still sad about Tybalt’s death and told Juliet that she will find someone to murder Romeo and revenge for Juliet. Then, she said she will tell a joyful news to Juliet and comfort her. Juliet needed the comfort and asked what the news is. Lady Capulet then told Juliet that she will be married to Paris in three days. Juliet laughed hard at first and then rejected the married. As Capulet comes in, he wished to hear that his daughter will be ready to get married. However, she’s not. Capulet then gets very mad and forced Juliet to the marriage by saying that if she doesn’t marry Paris, she will not be allowed to live in the house of Capulet anymore. The nurse tried to help Juliet but it didn’t work. Juliet asks help from her mom but Lady Capulet told her that she couldn’t anything either. After her parents left, Juliet asks the nurse to comfort her. However, the nurse started to tell Juliet that she wants Juliet to forget about Romeo and marry Paris. Paris is a great man and she should not disobey her parents. Juliet asks to see Frair. After the nurse left, Juliet reveals her fellings-she feels betrayed.
Important Quotes:
- Lady Capulet: Marry, my child, early next Thursday morn, the gallant, young, and noble gentleman, the County Paris, at Saint Peter’s Church, shall happily make thee there a joyful bride.
- Juliet: Now, by Saint Peter’s Church and Peter too, he shall not make me there a joyful bride.
- Juliet: I pray you tell my lord and father, madam, I will not marry yet, and when I do, I swear it shall be Romeo, whom you know I hate, rather than Paris.
- Capulet: Thank me no thankings, nor proud me no prouds, but fettle your fine joints’gainst Thursday next, to go with Paris to Saint Peter’s Church, or I will drag thee on a hurdle thither.
- Capulet: Speak not, reply not, do not answer me!
- Capulet: Thursday is near, lay hand on heart, advice. And you be mine, I’ll give you to my friend; and you be not, hang, beg, starve, die in the streets, for, by my soul, I’ll ne’er acknowledge thee, nor what is mine shall never do thee good. Trust to’t, bethink ou, I’ll not be forsworn.
Personal Thoughts:
Form these three scenes, I noticed not only how much Romeo and Juliet love each other, but also how dominant Juliet’s father is. In my opinion, one of the factors that led Juliet and Romeo to kill themselves was the carelessness their parents have towards them. Capulet says all of his lines as if he’s giving commands. And in fact, he is giving commands for most times. However, after being rejected by Juliet, Capulet went outraged. It might be because his successful life, Capulet doesn’t get rejected by people often. On the other hand, parents always wich their children obey them. When children refuse to follow the order, they get mad. Capulet’s reaction gives me a feeling that Juliet is not his daughter, but a product that he uses to tread with others. He doesn't care how Juliet feels at all. At the same time, I found out that Capulet not only doesn’t care about his daughter, he doesn’t care about others either. He calls his wife “wife” as if that is just a states that he gives her instead of who she is. He wouldn’t even let nurse talk just because he knows that she is not on his side. When Juliet begged him to have some mercy and don’t let her marry such a stranger, he just shouted to her regardless of her words. Juliet is not loved by her parents. Or maybe she is loved by her mother, but her mother doesn’t have any power to help her. Her mother doesn’t even have the power to be respected by her own husband.
