Scene 1:
In the beginning of the scene, Mercutio and Benvolio were talking to each other. Then, Tybalt and other Capulets come. Tybalt wants to talk with Romeo. However, with the hatred towards each other, Mercutio and Tybalt started to argue with each other. Benvolio wants them to calm down and behave peacefully in the public. It didn’t work and the two just kept no arguing. When Romeo comes, Tybalt went straight towards him and insulted Romeo by saying “thou art a villain.” Romeo denied his argument and refused Tybalt’s request of fighting. However, Mercutio couldn’t stand Tybalt anymore and started to fight with Tybalt. Romeo tried to talk to Mercutio and Tybalt to stop the fighting. Then, Romeo went between the two and held Mercutio. Mercutio couldn’t move. Tybalt stabbed Mercutio at that moment and ran away. Mercutio was hurt, both physically and emotionally. He couldn’t stand the fact that he was hurt under the arms of Romeo. After Mercutio died, Tybalt comes back and wanted to kill Romeo too. Even though Romeo wanted to remain peaceful, he was so angry about Mercutio’s death and killed Tybalt during the fight. Benvolio told Romeo to run away after Romeo killed Tybalt. Then, the Prince and the leaders of the two houses all came on stage. Finally, the Prince decided the Romeo was banished from Verona.
Important Quotes:
- Mercutio: (to Romeo) Why the dev’I came you between us? I was hurt under your arms.”
- Romeo: (to Tybalt) That late thou gavest me, for Mercutio’s soul is but a little way above our heads, staying for thine to keep him company. Either thou or I, or both, must go with him.
- Prince: I will be deaf to pleading and excuses, nor tears nor prayers shall purchase out abuses; Therefore use none. Let Romeo hence in haste, else when he is found, that hour is his last.
Scene 2:
In the beginning of the scene, Romeo was so excited because she now is Romeo’s Wife. When the night comes, her Romeo shall come too and enjoy their marriage together. When the nurse entered the room, she seemed very unusual. Juliet noticed it and asked her what went wrong with Romeo. The nurse didn’t point out who it is at first. She just kept saying, “ he’s dead, he’s dead, he’s dead” and “ O Romeo, Romeo, Romeo.” That made Juliet so worried and thought Romeo killed himself. When the nurse finally told Juliet Tybalt is killed by Romeo and Romeo was banished, Romeo was very surprised. She never thought her husband would end up killing her dearest cousin. The nurse started to blame Romeo too. However, Juliet thought the only important information to her is that Romeo is alive and was banished. She was sorry for Tybalt at first but then she felt so happy that her lover is still alive. And then she was sad again because of Romeo’s banishment. She was so sad and the nurse started to worry about her. With her love to Juliet, the nurse promised to bring Romeo to Juliet at night to let them meet. Juliet gave her ring to the nurse and ask her to give it to Romeo.
Important Quotes:
- Nurse: Tybalt is gone, and Romeo banished.
- Nurse: Shame comes to Romeo.
- Juliet: Shall I speak ill of him that is my husband?... When I, thy three-hours wife, have mangled it? But wherefore, villain, didst thou kill my cousin? That villain cousin would have to kill’d my husband.
- Juliet: “Tybalt is dead, and Romeo banished.” That “banished,” that one word “banished” hath slain ten thousand Tybalts.
- Nurse: I’ll find Romeo to comfort you…your Romeo will be here at night.
- Juliet: O, find him! Give this ring to my true knight, and bid him come to take his last farewell.
Lots people think these two scenes are the climax of the story. However, I don’t think so. In my opinion, the point where every started to go to the wrong direction is when Romeo and Juliet met each other for the first time and just started to talk about love and marriage. Two children madly in love is not a good thing. They would do anything for their lovers, and they actually did. Romeo really started to seek peace between Capulets and Montagues and not fighting back when his greatest enemy come to his face and say that he is a villain. Juliet, for her husband, just forget all about her own cousin. In her mind, a person who had been with her for her whole life worse to die ten thousand times while her three-house husband gets banished for killing her cousin. This love made both of them changed so much, especially Juliet. She acted so emotional, so cruel and so cold-blooded to her families when talking about Romeo. In my opinion, this is not loving. A true love should not lead people to be ugly. It should inspire the lovers to be positive and be a better person. The Juliet in the play is really changing my way of viewing this character and her relationship with Romeo.
