When Romeo first came to the stage in the play, he was struggled and sad because the girl he loves doesn’t love him back. At first, when Benvolio asked Romeo why he is sad, Romeo didn’t want Benvolio to know about it. As Benvolio mentioned “in love” Romeo acted a little frustrated and asked Benvolio to leave. In the end of scene one, Romeo told Benvolio about his struggle. In that way, I noticed that Romeo is not really outgoing. He likes to hide his feelings inside and not talk to others easily. Benvolio got to know about his sadness just because Benvolio kept on asking him and was trying to help him feel better. In addition to that, I also find out that he doesn’t have a good relationship with his parents. They had to ask someone else to help them to know about their son. Romeo is definitely not the kind of children that depend on his parents a lot. Moreover, in the first scene, I thought Romeo was the kind of person that would be love very deep and it might be hard for him to forget about one love and start over right away. However, the encounter between him and Juliet changed my point of view a lot. The personality shown in the first introduction of Romeo made me think he is a shy boy and I wanted to know what made him so in love with Juliet and even decided to kill himself in the end.

When Juliet first appear to the play, her mother called her out to talk about her marriage with Paris. However, the mother wanted Juliet’s nurse to be there and join the conversation. That showed the relationship between Juliet and her parents are not as good too. Her father didn’t even come over to look how his daughter thinks about her marriage and just asked his wife to convince her to be the bride of a total stranger. When her mother told her that there is a man wanting to marry her, Juliet was a little excited. She was only 13 and love is a brand new feeling to her. Even she doesn’t know anything about the man, she would still be expecting to see him. However, she feels forced to love that person. That might made her doesn’t want to show too much of happiness to her parents’ decision to let her meet Paris.  With the nurse cheering up by her side, the comparison between them showed that Juliet was not so happy about this marriage. During the conversation of her marriage, Juliet barely spoke. Her life, her husband, her decision was all chosen by someone else. This made me feel bad for her. I also have some sympathy towards her too. Children should be able to speak for themselves too. Juliet should be able to talk about her opinions and what she wants in her life. The situation she’s under made me kind of understand why she would drink the poison in order to avoid the marriage and try to run away with Romeo.
